Anti-vaccine nut comes to visit

Sometimes people confuse me. I just got a comment on an article I wrote for the Collegian last year about vaccinations and autism.

Vaccines are POISON. The only one[s] who benefit from vaccines are PHARMACEUTICALS. Lots of Vitamin D will protect you from the flu and many other diseases. DON’T be fooled by paid off media hype. STOP the sickening assault on humanity.

I’ve never heard anyone claim that vitamin D will prevent or cure any communicable disease. Usually it’s vitamin C or zinc or some ground up animal part. Vitamin D does increase the activity of killer cells, and deficiency certainly makes you more vulnerable to influenza, but to claim that it will “protect” you is ridiculous. (It can also be toxic, but that’s another story. )

Then there’s the “evil corporation” trope. I’m not a fan of pharmaceutical companies, to be honest; they charge ridiculously high prices and manipulate data to make it look like their drugs are better than they are. But to say that pharma companies are peddling poison is preposterous. For one thing, it’s a horrible business model. Selling products that kill your customers is not sustainable. If they really wanted to exploit us, they’d sell placebos. Moreover, pharmaceutical companies rarely make any money off of vaccines. They’re time consuming and difficult to make, and the only reason we get enough is because of government subsidies. And don’t forgett that every independent study shows that vaccines are safe and effective.

If you believe that the media is on the side of the vaccine manufacturers, you haven’t been paying attention lately. There’s Oprah, who’s helped Jenny McCarthy get her own talk show, there’s Margarite Kelly, who’s been writing that vaccines cause autism, even though every fucking study shows the opposite, and there’s Matt Lauer, who’s doing a special on vaccines in which he throws softballs to people like Dr. Wakefield, who falsified data to make it look like the MMR vaccine causes autism.

Oh, and it’s “pharmaceutical companies” you’re ranting about, not “pharmaceuticals,” dumbass.

I’ve heard this one a fair bit as well, and it never ceases to really, really piss me off. I have an autistic older brother, and upon learning this, people often ask me “Was there a specific incident that caused it, like a vaccination or something?” to which I’m forced to respond “No, he was born several months premature; please don’t ever talk to me about my brother again.”
